BMW ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK SYSTEM
In this topic, we will discuss a fault with the Electronic Steering Lock system on the later BMWs (which have cassette-style keys), which seems to be becoming more of a common problem among these vehicles. If your BMW has the cassette-style key and you have been presented with a yellow or red steering lock notification light on your dash and a message on your screen stating, for example, “Steering wheel lock malfunction!”.
Don’t ignore this fault warning, as it can lead to your vehicle being immobilised and into a lock state and generally having to be recovered for repair. It is far easier to address this issue before it completely locks down.

The range of vehicles this issue covers are at least the BMW E90, E91, E92, E93, E81, E82, E87, E88, E60, E61, E63 & E64, which is a concern, to say the least.

If you decided to get this problem looked into by BMW themselves or one of their recognised repairers, you will be faced with a quotation and bill for a replacement steering column which, with labour, will cost roughly £900. Rather than face a hefty bill for firstly recovering your vehicle to a repair centre and secondly replacing the steering rack, here at O.G.S. Mechanics, we can offer a mobile and in-house solution to force the mechanism out of its locked state (not by brute force but by software protocols), clear the fault on the control module and then perform a software update which should prevent this common issue from reoccurring.
