Volvo XC40 – Post Foreword

Buying a car at auction is always a gamble, but our latest project—the repair of a Volvo XC40—felt like running a marathon. Our client bought this Volvo XC40 sight unseen, knowing only that it was locked, without the key, and that it had damage to the front and rear.

What he did not know was how extensive the problems were, and the real gambling it was not knowing if the engine would fire. Without a well-functioning engine, repair costs would increase significantly. But let’s move on! This post documents the most important steps done to determine whether this car at auction is a worthwhile investment or an expensive mistake.

Initial Assessment and first operations on the Volvo XC40

When we saw the Volvo XC40, it was immediately clear that we had a big job to do. The car could not be started without a key and there was no electricity. This was not a simple case of a dead battery: the vehicle was completely unresponsive. A closer inspection revealed considerable water ingress inside the car and visible damage to both the front and rear. With water inside and unable to start the car, it was impossible to control the ignition or other electronic systems. We began a thorough investigation to understand the extent of the problems.

First things first – remove the water and dry all the electronic components

One of the biggest challenges was the water. Both sides of the car were soaked, and water had accumulated in various compartments. Water and electronics do not get on well together, so the first thing we had to do was drain the water and let everything dry for a few days.

Draining the water from inside the Volvo

After that, we cleaned the corrosion from the connectors and the electrical and electronic components. Our initial scans revealed numerous issues, most stemming from water damage. This was a painstaking process but essential to prevent further electrical problems. We believe the car had been left with the windows open for an extended period, allowing rainwater to flood the interior. After replacing the battery with a new one, the dashboard lights started flickering and the car came back to life.

Solving the problem of the missing key

Without a key, we couldn’t do much. We got a new key and set up our VIDA(Volvo Vehicle Information and Diagnostics for Aftersales) equipment to program it. The key programming process involved communicating with the car’s keyless module and the central electronics module located under the dashboard. Given the moisture in the car, we were concerned about potential damage to these critical components, but luckily, everything went OK.

A small but very important note concerning the programming of a new car key! When programming a new key, the car battery must be in good condition. If the voltage drops, there is a real possibility of corrupting and damaging the control unit.

The VIDA software tells us where to place the key: in this particular case, it is under the armrest, at the front. As you can see in the photo, there is a mark indicating where to place it.

Having successfully finished programming the key, we tested it, and everything was OK. Another step has been taken, a diagnosis is made to see what other problems arise.

Car Diagnostics and circuit checks

With the key programmed, we began a thorough car diagnostic process. After checking circuits, changing some blown fuses, and seeing some electrical systems coming back to life, we are ready to test the engine.

Now the moment of truth has arrived! Will the engine start? Unfortunately, we’ve got an engine that is turning over but not yet firing. However, we are making significant progress from when the vehicle first came in on the rollers with no lights and was completely shut down. Now, we’ve got a key and the engine is turning over. I think we are on the right path to getting this car back on the road! Let’s see; we still don’t know everything about this engine yet.

Bringing engine to life

After a few days of continuing to work on the Volvo, we got to the point of trying to start the engine again.

Because of the front and end damage, there was crash data stored in the engine control unit, which we had to reset to try to restart the engine.

And, miracle, the engine is firing! And not only that—the infotainment module is also still alive, even though it was completely soaked in water. This was a huge win, as the engine’s condition was a big question mark throughout the process. We can say that our customer is very lucky.

The Final Steps to bring the Volvo XC40 back on the road

With the engine running and major electrical systems operational, we turned our attention to the remaining repairs. The front and rear damage required extensive bodywork, which involved replacing the bonnet and, repairing the bumper and other structural components. Due to the front damage, we also had to replace the radiator.

A new radiator

We also fixed some lingering issues with the parking brake and the airbag warning light, ensuring all systems were fully functional. The interior was completely dried out and we replaced all damaged components.

Conclusion

After several weeks of hard work, we transformed this non-starting, water-damaged auction car into a functioning vehicle. The customer was thrilled with the results, especially since the engine turned out to be in good condition. While there were risks involved, the initial low purchase price and our successful repairs made this a worthwhile investment for the customer.

Volvo XC40 ready to go back on the road

In conclusion, buying an auction car like this Volvo XC40 can be a gamble, but with the right skills and dedication, it can also be an opportunity to acquire a valuable vehicle at a fraction of the cost. This project highlighted the challenges and rewards of car restoration, proving that even the most daunting projects can have a happy ending.
